This father's day blog is dedicated to Sh-Mo "Big Daddy" Al Maktoum. I would like to take a moment and reflect on the family al Maktoum.
The first thing is of course love. Mohammend's love for his children seems geniune and is captured beautifully in all the official family candids. Maybe you have seen these pictures? From making eyes at them in airports and pointing out photographers so they can smile; to gathering a crowd to welcome them home after the Olympics (with obvious pride); he really seems to love his kids. That love is returned as each child tenderly hugs and kisses him when given the opportunity. There is a real, tender moment as each child melts a little bit and just becomes a child hugging a beloved parent. A moment which is subsequently captured on film.
The next remarkable thing is that although he is the ruler of a country; he does not come off as dictating to his children. How do I come up with that? Well, they are each so different. Even from portaits you can see that each does their own thing for the most part. That autonomy is respected by Mohammend; and in turn, the siblings respect each other. Real power, particularly the hereditary right to rule a country, has famously pulled siblings apart. Each competing with the other for power and fame. However, the Al Maktoum competes for bragging rights only and hold hands and mug for the camera after events.
And lastly, he can make Majid smile. (I think) I once saw a picture of Majid smiling in the presence of his father. He is usally so serious, but with his dad, he can smile. Saving scowls and fixed stares for his brothers and the public.
He makes Majid smile. That's all the proof I need to know he is a good dad.
